Potent aromas of chocolate and raspberry jam are laced with baking spices, lavishly surrounded by floral notes of lavender and violet, and supported by earthy, mineral notes. The wine offers an elegant, seamless, full-bodied attack with loads of cocoa, blackberry and black cherry fruit. Elegant French oak integrates the aromas nicely, leaving hints of vanilla and baking spices. Plush on the attack with velvety tannins, the palate restates the interplay of red and black fruit and is buoyed by an acidity that is the backbone of Spring Mountain terroir. The wine lingers on the palate, but one can sense the wine's youthful character and be assured that time is this wine's ally and the final element in the equation. Easily a two-decade wine for any of us with the patience to wait and watch it blossom. I recommend decanting a full two hours before service.

Additional Notes
The 2004 vintage stands out as memorable, with fruit that bears the imprint of an early spring, a slow and steady ripening period, and a harvest that ended several weeks ahead of traditional timelines. Warm, consistent summer weather was bracketed by an early spring bud break and several late summer hot spells, creating growing conditions that allowed for one of the earliest harvest periods in almost a decade, as well as an unusual opportunity for making outstanding wine.
