The 2000 vintage was a cool year by Napa Valley standards and the wines have a distinct Bordelaise character. Concentrated blackberry and currant aromas mingle nicely with notes of leather, chocolate and caramel. Sweet baking spices overlay the fruit and are well integrated. The palate attack is bright and fruit-forward with firm tannin support. The black fruit is re-stated on the palate, layered with flavors of cocoa and sandalwood. There is at least another decade of life in this one. Still youthful, the wine benefits from an hour or two of aeration before service.

While bud break occurred at the expected time, the growing season was generally cool. Mid-season, the valley experienced a brief heat spell bringing some of the highest recorded temperatures in Napa Valley history, with Calistoga registering 118°F. The average, valley-wide high was a blistering 113 – 114°F. With our elevation and positioning, Spring Mountain was several degrees cooler. A couple of days of rain in September gave the grapes the extra kick to keep ripening, extending hang time and allowing the full natural flavors to develop on the vine. In retrospect, our only disappointment with the 2000 harvest was that it was too small.
