A "classic" growing year, 1997 is considered the finest vintage from the '90s. The Napa Valley wines are characterized by having warm, supple fruit flavors and soft, yet distinguished tannin structures. This 1997 Reserve is the epitome of this legendary vintage and shows what Bordeaux blends can achieve on our mountainous vineyards in terms of balance and approachability.

Wine Specs

"Appellation: Spring Mountain District, Napa Valley – Estate Grown & Bottled
Assemblage: Cabernet Sauvignon 89%, Merlot 8%, Petit Verdot 3%
Élevage: 22 Months, New French Oak"

Winemaker’s Comments

Layered aromatics including dry cocoa, dry herbs, black fruit such as blackberry and black currant, plus hints of tobacco, mint, dried beef and plum. Rich attack, great mid-palate feel, loads of dark fruit with cocoa, espresso and licorice, all braced by a solid acid backbone and structured tannins. A long, dynamic finish is both lively and substantial. Should age well into the next decade and continue to evolve. Decant ahead of time, allowing for one to two hours of aeration for this wine to open. Care should be taken when removing the cork. I recommend using a compression type 'ah-so' cork puller.

Additional Notes

Simply put, this is a great vintage. This wine is big, full bodied, and intense in flavor. 1997 was a warm year on Spring Mountain with unusually large fluctuations between day and night temperatures. Early ripening grapes bestowed rich colors, tannins, and a strong varietal character. This was the first year we had access to all the La Perla fruit which expanded our production and brought wonderful new lots into our wine inventory. Grapes from each of the four vineyard properties are considered in our blend. The multitude of top quality lots with distinctly different attributes allows us to be extremely selective.
