The aromas are a mixed potpourri of strong forest floor, tobacco and cocoa notes complemented by an array of dried flowers, herbs, and berry fruit. On the palate, the entry is round, generous, and polished. There is structure to the wine that adds depth and complexity. The tannins are present through the finish, which help carry the wine through to a soft and long finish. This wine still has many years of life left, but it is drinking exceptionally well right now.

Winemaker’s Comments

Visually, the 1987 belies its age with blood red density and only the slightest bricking at the edge. The aromas are full of concentrated berry fruit with nuances of violets, cocoa, dry herbs and sous bois. The wine is lively on the palate with loads of dark fruit, concentrated blackberry and cassis and an intriguing riparian dry forest floor note that gives the wine depth and complexity. The finish elongates and fades softly like late afternoon shadows. The 1987 is drinking beautifully and should hold well into the next decade. The wine benefits from some aeration. I would recommend decanting at least 30 minutes before service.

Additional Notes

The 1987 vintage in Napa Valley underwent an even distribution of rain throughout the spring, which had minor impact on the fruit set. This required rigorous selection during harvesting and blending, but the resulting wine is both structural, fresh, and long-lived. Patience was key with the 1987 vintage because while the wines were wound tightly in their youth, the firm tannin structure provided longevity to the vintage.
