Aromas are of a fully mature Cabernet. Notes of leather and tobacco surround a core of potpourri and dried cherries with a dusting of cocoa. In the background is a mix of soy and dry spices that adds to the intrigue and layering of the wine. The entry is soft and polished, still showing a vibrant acid backbone that reinforces the dried cherry and floral characteristics. Still a mouth-filling wine with character, fruit, and a polished mouthfeel. The finish manages to persist after the last sip, but should be enjoyed soon. Care should be taken with cork extraction. Best to use an 'ah-so' style compression cork puller. The wine has been in the bottle for 45 years. It is fragile and doesn't need a lot of aeration. Decant 10-15 minutes before serving.

Additional Notes
This vintage is unusual in that it is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 70's and 80's it was common for Spring Mountain to blend Merlot or Cabernet Franc, or both, in small amounts in their Cabernet bottling. The largest source of grapes for these wines was their Wildwood Vineyard in east Rutherford along the Silverado Trail. There they grew Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The wine was fermented to full extraction and aged in well-seasoned French oak barrels for 22 months.
